What is Stoicism?

by note1328 2025. 7. 20.

Stoicism is a philosophical school of thought that began in the 3rd century BC in Greece, and emphasizes inner peace and moral virtue. This philosophy aims to maintain a life attitude of not being swayed by external circumstances or situations, and focusing on one's inner self and reason to maintain composure.

Key Principles

• Focus on what you can control

The most important principle of Stoicism is to focus only on what you can control and accept what you cannot control. Since anxiety and agitation arise when we fixate on things we cannot change, it is believed that we should focus on our actions and attitudes.

• Pursue excellence by doing your best

It is important to focus on the process, not the result, and to do the best within your ability. This will help you to avoid the fear or anxiety of failure.

• Take responsibility and change your interpretation

It emphasizes that external events do not make us happy or unhappy, but rather our interpretation and reaction to those events. Another key principle is that we should take responsibility for our choices and actions.

Modern meaning

Stoic philosophy is not just a theory, but is considered a practical life skill. It helps to develop emotional resilience and self-control, and to develop an attitude that is not shaken by stress and anxiety. It is also recognized as a practical value in various fields such as self-development, psychological stability, and leadership in modern society.
