Calligraphy

by note1328 2025. 7. 19.

Calligraphy means beautiful and unique hand-drawn pictographs, or ‘handwriting’. It is derived from the Greek word kallos (beauty) and graphe (writing), and is a technique for expressing letters artistically.

Characteristics of calligraphy

• It is an analog and unique cursive style, allowing creative expression beyond ordinary letters.

• It contains emotional and human warmth, and is widely used in design and art.

• It is often interpreted in a modern way, as illustrations or decorations are added to letters and sentences.

History and development

• Western calligraphy began in northern Italy in the 14th to 16th centuries and was revived by Edward Johnston in England, and the term was first used by Guillaume Appolinaire.

• In Korea, it was introduced as a term corresponding to calligraphy in the early industrial era, and design calligraphy, which is distinct from calligraphy, has spread in the 21st century.

• It has become established as a popular art with the establishment of the first calligraphy company in Korea in 1998 and the establishment of the Korea Calligraphy Design Association in 2008.

Areas of application

• It is used in all areas of visual design, such as advertising, signboards, product design, movie posters, book covers, and package design.

• Calligraphy is an artistic means of expressing words and sentences beautifully with emotion, and is considered important in the fields of marketing and art.

Basic tools and techniques

• Traditionally, brushes, ink, and rice paper are used, and brush pens and various pens are also used.

• The basics are the method of holding the brush (double-point method, single-point method) and line drawing practice (straight lines, curves, zigzag lines, etc.).

In summary, calligraphy is an art that goes beyond simple writing and expresses the beauty and emotion of letters, and is a unique visual art form that combines traditional calligraphy and modern design.
