Once, in a vast forest where ancient trees whispered secrets to the wind, lived a small sparrow named Suri. Unlike her flock, Suri was curious, always flitting to the edges of the unknown, seeking wisdom beyond the daily hunt for seeds. Her wings, though tiny, carried the ambition of a soaring eagle, inspired by tales from distant lands
One morning, as dawn painted the sky in hues of saffron and rose, Suri heard a rumor from a passing crane. Deep within the forest, hidden behind a veil of mist, flowed a Golden Stream, said to grant wisdom to any creature who drank from it. But the stream was guarded by a cunning fox, who demanded a riddle’s answer in exchange for a single sip. Many had tried, but none returned wiser—only humbled or lost.
Suri, her heart alight with curiosity, flew toward the mist. Along the way, she recalled an Aesopian tale of a crow who solved a problem with cleverness, not strength. “Perhaps,” she thought, “wit is my path.” As she flew, she pondered , wondering if the stream’s wisdom was real or merely a reflection of her own mind. The in her thoughts: “He who guards his mouth preserves his life.” She resolved to speak carefully. And she remembered the power of a story to sway even the hardest heart.
At last, Suri reached the Golden Stream, its waters shimmering like liquid sunlight. The fox, with fur red as embers and eyes sharp as thorns, lounged by the bank. “Answer my riddle, little bird,” he purred, “and you may drink. Fail, and you’ll wander the forest forever, lost in my maze of illusions.”
The fox spoke his riddle:
“I am weightless, but you can see me. Put me in a bucket, and I’ll make it lighter. What am I?”
Suri perched on a low branch, her mind racing. She thought, weighing each word. A weightless thing, visible, yet lightening a load? She recalled —how the void within a wheel’s hub makes it useful. Could it be so simple? She considered, where answers often hid in plain sight, cloaked in cleverness.
“A hole,” Suri chirped confidently. “It has no weight, you can see its edges, and when added to a bucket, it lets the contents spill, making it lighter.”
The fox’s eyes narrowed, surprised. “Clever sparrow,” he growled, stepping aside. “Drink, but know this: wisdom is a burden as much as a gift.”
Suri sipped from the Golden Stream, and visions flooded her mind—truths of the forest, the hearts of its creatures, and the fleeting nature of life itself. But as the fox warned, the wisdom weighed heavy. She saw not only beauty but also sorrow, not only truth but also its cost.
Returning to her flock, Suri shared her knowledge sparingly, like seeds scattered on fertile ground. She taught them to see beyond the moment, to question, to discern, and to weave stories. Yet, she remained humble, knowing wisdom’s true power lay in its careful use.
And so, the forest flourished, guided by a sparrow who drank from the Golden Stream but carried its weight with grace.
