Young Old

by note1328 2025. 7. 5.

Young Old refers to young seniors between the ages of 55 and 75. They are a generation that has just entered old age, but has health, assets, and income. Unlike the elderly of the past, they are characterized by active consumption and participation in social activities.

·   Economic and social vitality: Young-olds invest generously in travel, self-development, and hobbies, and in developed countries, their consumption greatly invigorates the economy.

·   High health and education level: They are much younger and healthier than the elderly of the same age in the past, and they are also active in creating social value through talent donation and volunteer work based on their diverse experiences and knowledge.

·   A new look at old age: In Japan and other countries, they are called ‘active seniors’ and are recognized as a new type of elderly people who do not need care from others.

·   Emergence as a major consumer: In the US, Europe, etc., the annual spending of young and old people amounts to 40% of the total population, making them a major consumer.

      •  75~85 years old: Old Old

      •  85 years and older: Oldest

In Korea, the proportion of young and old is increasing, but there is also criticism that their role as a consumer is limited because their assets are often tied up in real estate.
